Fertility nutrition does NOT have to break the bank

You could buy this supplement, and that one, and only organic, and daily green juice from the healthy cafe down the road. But you don’t have to. And your fertility friendly diet does not have to break the bank.

When you dive into the world of fertility and pregnancy nutrition, you will undoubtedly be bombarded with adverts about supplements and health foods. Some of them are useful, like Vitamin D and Folic Acid. But not all of them have a good evidence base for recommendation, and may be more cost than benefit.

You may also be shown just how great it is to have avocado, hemp seeds and wild salmon… these foods do have a good evidence base and can be supportive of your fertility journey. But it doesn’t mean your food bill needs to sky-rocket.

Here are some budget friendly ideas:

  • Opt for frozen or tinned vegetables and fruit if you find fresh often goes to waste

  • Salmon isn’t the only oily fish, you can try sardines, trout or mackerel as less expensive options

  • Bulk buy nuts and seeds, and portion them a tablespoon at a time (a sprinkle here and there, no need to buy a packet per day)

  • Buy dried grains - if you’re gaining confidence with cooking them, it is much cheaper to buy dried lentils, quinoa, and grains than buying the pre-seasoned/cooked versions

  • Take a packed lunch! A filled wrap with houmous and falafels and salad made at home will be cheaper than the version from the highstreet cafe

  • Keep your supplements simple. If you are eating a varied diet, then minimal supplementation is needed. So save your pennies from marketing, and spend them in the market!
